Site Web: "The Nikka-Times"

Mr. Toshiaki Suzuki, Tokyo Shiatsu Clinic/Suzuki Shiatsu Clinic, a specialist in acupuncture, moxibustion and shiatsu, Mr. Toshiaki Suzuki is nicknamed “Don” . It has just been 20 years since it opened in 1992 and has three Shiatsu clinics in Toronto. Tokyo Shiatsu Eglington Clinic (Yonge Street, north of Eglinton), Branch Shiatsu Shiatsu Beach Clinic (Queen Street East) and Suzuki Shiatsu St. Joseph Clinic (Yonge x Wellesley). A total of 15 staff (10 Japanese, 5 Canadians) are currently employed at these clinics.
“The Tokyo Shiatsu treatment at our main hospital is more likely to have ailments such as pain and illness. Suzuki Shiatsu at the branch hospital seems to be visited by many customers,” says Suzuki. In addition to shiatsu, acupuncture, and moxibustion, patients who come to the hospital for sprains, bruise, etc. are also treated.
▲Acupuncture Treatment In addition to regular 55-minute regular sessions ($82), 30-minute half sessions ($45), deluxe sessions ($117), double sessions ($164), etc. it can. Seniors also receive a $10 discount (regular session only). All reservations required. A cheap coupon ticket is also available, which is convenient for people who regularly visit the hospital. A system called "Quick Shiatsu" is also used in all three stores. No reservation is required for this course. This is a method of applying shiatsu for 5 minutes, and it costs $7 for 5 minutes. The first treatment starts from 10 minutes ($14). If you wish to continue for 10 minutes or more, a charge of $7 will be added every 5 minutes. For example, it's calculated to be $42 for 30 minutes. In addition, there is a coupon ticket so that you can receive 22 treatments of 15 minutes each for $420. (All prices include tax) Mr. Suzuki was born in Ichikawa city, Chiba prefecture, and is 47 years old. Practicing judo from an early age. In high school attached to Chiba University of Commerce, he participated in a judo tournament, was in 3rd place in Kanto, and was able to reach the top 16 in the whole country. After entering Asia University, he acquired Judo 4th Dan. After graduating, I worked at an osteopathic clinic in the daytime and graduated from the Judo Reduction Department of Daito Medical College for three years at night. Here, he mainly learned four things: bone fracture, sprain, dislocation, and bruise (bruise), and acquired a judo reduction teacher's license. Around that time, Mr. Suzuki saw a Canadian job advertisement in the trade magazine "Ido no Nihon". Kazunobu Kamiya, who runs a shiatsu school and clinic in Toronto, was looking for people. Immediately applied and talked about, and moved to Canada in June 1990. I worked at Mr. Kamiya's Shiatsu clinic in Royal York, Toronto from 1990 to 1992. I was able to learn a lot from Mr. Kamiya, who has a long experience in Canada. “By the time I came to Canada, I felt Shiatsu was quite pervasive among Canadians, thanks to the efforts of teachers such as Kamiya, Ted Saito, and Noriko Ebata. It's been rewarding." April 1992, I finally became independent. Opened “Tokyo Shiatsu Clinic” in Young×Eglinton. The business has grown over the years and currently operates two main branch hospitals. Suzuki manages these three locations collectively. As a facility for treatment, there are 5 rooms in this hospital and 4 rooms in 2 branch hospitals. “The acupressure staff basically have a self-employment system. Each of them is a self-employed person at my store. It feels like a beauty salon or barber shop. I want to increase this scale in the future.” (Mr. Suzuki) There are various types of customers who come to receive medical treatment for fatigue, physical condition, etc., but a Canadian lawyer and accountant. It seems that many people have mental stress rather than physical stress. By the way, Hari is covered by private insurance to cover medical expenses (except for some insurance companies, Shiatsu is not covered by health insurance at this stage). “I'm surprised that many Canadians have more doubts and distrust of Western medicine and modern medicine than Japanese people. Those people can see the sick person (the whole) without seeing the disease (part). She seems to be very interested in Shiatsu, Acupuncture, and oriental medicine.” Currently, in order to operate a shiatsu business in Toronto, a license called “Holistic Practitioner License” is available. is necessary. To obtain this, you must be a member of the city's authorized Association. For Japanese people, there is an organization called The Japanese Shiatsu and Holistic Medicine Society of Canada (Chairman Don Suzuki) that is approved by the city, and if you are a member of this association, you can receive the approval of the city. .. Mr. Suzuki once had a shiatsu school in Toronto from 1994 to 2000. At that time, the young people who came for working holidays learned a lot at Suzuki's school, graduated, returned to Japan and started shiatsu work, and a story that opened in London in the United Kingdom, etc. We have various achievements. "I'm really happy that the people who have left the nest are active," he squints. And Suzuki, who has a dream of "I want to restart this school by all means".
“I hope that graduates who have studied Shiatsu school according to the prescribed number of class hours will spread Shiatsu (Shiatsu) in various places around the world. This is my wish.” Actually, Mr. Suzuki also manages in Japan. There is a business. It has a Misuzu Osteopathic Hospital in Motoyawata, Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture. About half of the year goes there. “Because I am traveling between Japan and Canada, it may be difficult for me to make an appointment in Toronto, but most of our staff have experience in Japan. Sufficient technology and experience. Please try it." Website: "The Nikka-Times"

(17 juillet 2010)

The third session was with Mr. Don Suzuki (titles omitted below) of the Tokyo Shiatsu Clinic, who operates a total of four shiatsu clinics in Toronto and Japan and himself offers treatments to local Canadians as a shiatsu massage therapist for 20 years. I heard his story
QLS: How did you start your business in Canada?
Suzuki: On June 1, 1990, I came to Canada for the first time as a working holiday at Korean Air (laughs). While working as a Shiatsu masseuse at a predetermined workplace, I was willing to play for a year, and after returning to Japan I planned to open an osteopathic clinic, but it was a completely unexpected development. The first thing that surprised me when I came here was that my salary was so good that I was wondering if I could receive it like this (laughs). The Japanese shiatsu industry at that time was in the world of apprenticeship, and was forced to work long hours at extremely low wages under the name of learning skills from a master, so I came to Toronto and had a commission system. It was shocking to know. In other words, 50% of the sales of the customer I treated were paid in a weekly payment, the location was a wealthy residential area, and because there were no competitors at that time, the hourly wage was high and it was quite a short time. I made a profit. In this case, I thought it would be much better to stay in Toronto than to go back to Japan and start operations. Another big difference between Japan and Japan is that in Canada, customers are not attached to the store, but the fact that the customer is attached to “self” in the relationship between individuals. If these people follow me as my customers, I had the intuition that it would be enough to rent a store and start by myself.
QLS: It seems that you didn't have much concern about starting a business abroad.
Suzuki: Since the house was originally self-employed, I think I knew what it was like to do business. After all, it just depends on how many people come in and how many people leave. Also, in the case of me, it was a job that earned me money, so if I had to work, I could work long hours without holidays, and I had no hesitation in starting a business. I also think that it was advantageous that people who do not need English, rather, who cannot speak English, can be trusted as if they were real Japanese people (laughs). Also, I was a little embarrassed in Japan because I was dealing with local people, but sometimes I could do it because I was overseas.
QLS: What does embarrassing say, for example?
Suzuki: You can't do that in Japan by arranging chairs on Yonge Street and directly inviting people walking on the street, but here in Japan you can feel the shame of a trip (laughs), and on the plate you can get a massage for $10. When I wrote "I'll do it" and said "Satsu, Tenderer", this person was interesting and became a customer. I think it was around the time that Japanese-owned sushi restaurants started to open up here and there, and the Japanese boom began to catch fire. Japanese cars were also becoming noticeable.
QLS: After all, launching a business is a difficult task to imagine. Is there a difference between the general needs of Shiatsu in Canada and Japan?
Suzuki: It's quite different from the image of being a "massage shop" or "Ama-san" in Japan, and I feel that they treat me as a professional in Canada. It seems that you have the impression that you are an oriental doctor, and he listens seriously to what you say, and treats you with the same respect as western doctors, so it feels good to work. .. Actually, "half-sick people" are clinics before becoming a sick person because they have health problems such as menopausal disorder, people with back pain, and there is no numerical problem in Western medicine, but somehow they feel sick. To visit. These patients have high expectations, so there is always pressure to get results right, for example, to eliminate pain in people with pain. However, it is rare for a wet relationship to go one step further like with Japanese patients, and here it is a very business-like relationship. After the treatment time is over, it is nice to be able to switch quickly without dragging the patient.
QLS: Are there any business differences between Japan and Canada?
Suzuki: The difference with Japan is that Japanese people generally like new things, and I think that it is the same in big cities such as NY, but it peaks in a few months after opening, but without contents After that, you gradually become poor. On the other hand, in the case of this country, when it first opened, quiet birds were squealing, but if it went slowly thereafter, sales gradually increased and became stable. And after that, if there is not much, sales will not drop sharply. As it is a multi-ethnic nation, it basically does not trust the other person easily. Instead, once you find a place where you can calm down, you will not easily flirt. Japanese people are cheating (laughs). The owners of Japanese restaurants generally agree. The new menu wasn't really popular, and local customers would continue to eat the same menu they liked for years. So, trying to do business locally in Canada is tough for the first few years, so you'll need some money and preparedness.
QLS: After all, it seems better to work at some clinic first and then become independent. By the way, Suzuki-san's clinic is recruiting people who come every year from work holidays. Is training provided?
Suzuki: At the beginning, I was pretty generous. I even picked up at the airfield, arranged a place to live, made them drink, and took me not only to Niagara Falls but also to Algonquin Park. So when I was told that I would quit when I was about to work, I was really surprised. Do you think that people coming from Japan are so entertaining that they should be taken for granted? It is natural for a local Japanese to help a newcomer. Is it due to the "radio boy" of those days (laughs)? That's why I stopped providing free training. That's why I started a Shiatsu private school, but it was rewarding because the students were serious, and it was good for business.
QLS: You've been through trial and error. Mr. Suzuki's shop also employs local staff, but is there any management difficulty?
Suzuki: At the beginning, the staff other than me, including the receptionist, were all local Canadians. On a big miso day, I was told I had a big cleaning today and I was told "I beg your pardon?" (laughs). Then there was a person who was chewing gum while operating, and I was wondering how I could stop it. This person is not convinced without explaining logically. It was difficult to explain because there is a medical opinion that chewing gum can increase concentration, but in the end, because Shiatsu was oriental, it was impossible to explain what was bad. You can't explain anything logically and you don't have to do anything. Then, I hired a Chinese Shiatsu doctor and failed. Fake credentials are not uncommon in China, and they find they have no passion for work anyway, and at one point are copying information from customer files. Information management is a real headache because I can easily steal information using UBS sockets these days.
QLS: Finally, what are your future plans?
Suzuki: I would like to increase the capacity by adding a few more stores to accommodate more people who come to Canada with technology from Japan.
QLS: That's good (for us too) (laughs). Thank you very much for your busy schedule today.
PS When I asked Mr. Suzuki what he likes about Toronto, he returned, saying, "A place with a light air," without a break. I was impressed with how good it was. (July 17, 2010)
